Tonnara di Marzamemi

Tonnara di Marzamemi — Marzamemi

Founded by the Arabs in the 10th century and enhanced in the 17th century by the Villadorata princes, it was one of the most important tuna fisheries in Sicily, active until the 1960s. The large warehouses with their semicircular arches on the quay remain — where the bluefin tuna was processed during the traditional 'mattanza' — along with the chimney, the loggia, and the houses of the tuna fishermen. Strolling among the arches at sunset, one can still feel the epic of the sea that brought prosperity to the village; many of the spaces now host shops and eateries.
