Marzamemi, a fishing village in the municipality of Pachino in the far southeast of Sicily, is one of the most beautiful and photographed fishing villages in Italy. The name comes from the Arabic Marsà al-hamàm, 'bay of the doves': here the Arabs established one of the most important tuna fisheries on the island in the 10th century, expanded in the 17th century by the Villadorata princes along with the palace, the church, and the fishermen's houses that still embrace the square. Today, the golden stone square suspended over the sea, the two bays with their small harbors, the honey-colored houses, and the tables at sunset make it the summer living room of southeastern Sicily, a natural film set (from 'Sud' by Salvatores onwards) and the venue for the frontier film festival.

Founded by the Arabs in the 10th century and enhanced in the 17th century by the Villadorata princes, it was one of the most important tuna fisheries in Sicily, active until the 1960s.
