La Balata is the ancient smooth stone slipway where fishermen used to haul their boats ashore, now the 'terrace by the sea' of the village: golden slabs gently descending into the transparent water, just a stone's throw from the square. In front, the Isola Piccola (or Brancati islet) with the solitary villa that inspired writers and directors, and further south the Isola Grande closing the bay. At sunset, it is the most romantic spot in Marzamemi: an aperitif on the balate with your feet almost in the water.
