Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime

Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime — Siracusa

The great cone of concrete and steel that dominates the skyline of Syracuse — visible even from the Greek Theatre — is the sanctuary that commemorates the weeping of a plaster image of the Madonna, which occurred in a house on Via degli Orti from August 29 to September 1, 1953: the most famous Marian event of the twentieth century in Italy. Designed by the French architects Michel Andrault and Pierre Parat, consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1994, it stands 103 meters tall (74 meters for the conical roof alone) with a diameter of 80 meters: the circular crypt houses the image and the relics of the tears. The internal effect is powerful: a cone of light and ribs that converge towards the sky.
