Tempio di Apollo

Tempio di Apollo — Siracusa

As you cross the bridge to Ortigia, in Piazza Pancali next to the market, the ruins of the oldest Doric stone temple in Sicily (early 6th century BC) emerge. An inscription on the eastern step recalls the dedicant Kleomenes and the dedication to Apollo. Stout, closely spaced monolithic columns, typical of archaic Doric: two are still standing along with part of the cell wall. Over the centuries, it has served as a Byzantine church, a mosque, a Norman church again, and even a Spanish barracks: each era has left a readable mark in the stones. It can be admired freely from the balustrade, in just a few minutes, perhaps while heading to the nearby Ortigia market (morning, except Sunday).
