One of the largest medieval fortresses in Italy, on the acropolis of the highest city in the country: six of the original twenty towers still soar, and from the Torre Pisana, half of Sicily can be seen with Mount Etna framing the view. Next to it, the Rocca di Cerere, where the sanctuary of the goddess of the harvest once stood: here the myth places the abduction of Proserpina at the nearby Lake Pergusa.
