The Botanical Garden of Messina was created in 1638 and is dedicated to its founder, the Roman physician and botanist Pietro Castelli, who named it "Hortus simplicium" or "Hortus messanensis"; since its foundation, it has belonged to the University of Messina, and it is currently a facility of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.
