Agrigento was an important Greek polis located on the southern coast of Sicily, in the area corresponding to the present-day city of Agrigento. Founded by colonists from Gela, it reached its peak in the 5th century BC under the tyrant Theron and soon became renowned throughout the ancient world, so much so that Pindar referred to it as "the most beautiful city of mortals."
