The Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace is a building located in the territory of Bronte, near the border with Maniace, in the metropolitan city of Catania. It was founded in the 12th century by Queen Margherita di Navarra, wife of Guglielmo I of Sicily, in honor of the Byzantine commander Giorgio Maniace, prince and Vicario of the Emperor of Constantinople, whose descendants were related to the royal house of Altavilla. It was donated in perpetuity along with the feudal estate in 1799 by King Ferdinando I of the Two Sicilies to the English admiral Horatio Nelson to thank him for suppressing the Neapolitan Republic, thus saving his kingdom.
