Festa di Santa Lucia

The most heartfelt festival of Syracuse: on December 13th, the silver statue of the patroness leaves the Cathedral and crosses the city to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in the Borgata, among tens of thousands of faithful, the 'green hats' who carry the vara on their shoulders and the cry 'Sarausana jè!'. The Octave on December 20th brings the saint back to the Cathedral. A week of celebrations, lights, and cuccìa, the sweet ritual of cooked wheat.
